RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages down to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," he said. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
