Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
