Courtroom illustration Legal proceedings
Jon Ruben pleaded guilty to 17 criminal counts at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week

A person who contaminated sweets with tranquilliser and provided them to children at a summer program in the area has admitted sexual offenses against two young males both nine and ten years old.

Jon Ruben was arrested after eight children and a grown-up became sick at the location in the summer month.

The senior citizen, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, confessed to a total of 17 charges when he stood at the judicial center on Friday.

Nevertheless, he denied one particular crime he was charged with, which was against a young boy.

The defendant was held in detention before a further hearing on November 28th.

'Sweet game'

The prosecutor, handling the case, outlined the defendant's actions to the court.

She said his those affected were disadvantaged youngsters who were staying at a youth camp which he operated.

The defendant played a "sweet game" with the children, Mrs Prior said, in which he would access the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and tell them to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She stated to the judge the man had conducted this practice with the children "for many years", and youngsters had earlier experienced illness the subsequent day.

She stated the man had been successful in rationalizing this repeatedly as the minors being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepchild had worries in July 2025.

Mrs Prior KC stated further: "This year his stepson had suspicions about the activities, justifiably.

"They chose" to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

Mrs Prior KC stated objects including lubricant, Vaseline and injection devices were located, and his family member alerted the police about his concerns.

She stated the defendant went on to play the "sweet game" with six boys that night - July 26th - and they were all ill the following morning.

"The police had not arrived by that point," she stated further.

The oversight body, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was examining Leicestershire Police's handling of the events.

The legal representative said the children were unable to walk properly due to their condition, so Ruben's stepson called the authorities once more.

She stated Ruben then played the "candy game" in a room of five minors.
