The English and Welsh Pitted Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

England and Wales find themselves placed in the same pool for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major pool stage clash in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their famous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the English team's surprise early exit.

Other Notable Pool Draws

Ireland and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group together, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they secured a 36-14 victory, with Scotland failing to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in France, round out that same group.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked the Springboks before the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks win their own group.

Tournament Implications

Should the groups conclude according to the current global standings, further top favourites like New Zealand and France would remain separated from the likes of the English and Ireland all the way to the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on that side of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture designed to launch the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Pool B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the other six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
