Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.
Officers state they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then located numerous other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state preliminary tests indicate the substance was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; officials are not yet aware of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for tips.
A high-ranking official stated the attack rendered him stunned and had to be resolved rapidly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of migrant background in 2020.
